School life
Student opportunities and activities
Kingsgrove North High School is committed to providing new learning opportunities and experiences for students. The school has a variety of whole school and community programs that are designed to enhance the teaching and learning that takes place in the classroom by encouraging and providing students with the opportunity to develop new friendships as well as create their own future, whatever their interests, skills and passions.
Chess club
A Chess club runs every Tuesday in the school library for the chess enthusiast. Students are under the supervision of staff and have the opportunity of not only competing against each other but are also given guidance and information about the game of chess and how they can improve their skills.
Academic competitions
Each year students from Kingsgrove North High School participate in a variety of academic competitions, these include:
- Mind Marathon for the Gifted and Talented
- mathematics competitions run through the University of New South Wales
- the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) science competition
- maths and science olympiad.
The Mind Marathon is a yearly competition held at East Hills Boys High School and involves participation from over 60 schools in the Sydney Metropolitan Region.
The science competition is one of the ICAS competitions run Australia-wide. Students sit a multiple choice exam specific to their year group. The exam consists of questions from a variety of sciences incorporating skills as well as knowledge and understanding.
The science olympiad can incorporate chemistry and/or physics and involves Year 10 and 11 students participating in acceleration classes after school for a few months before the date of the exam. The classes and exam give year 10 students an opportunity to accelerate their science knowledge and access concepts from senior subjects.
The Royal Australian Chemical Society runs the chemistry quiz annually. The multiple choice exam challenges students to answer questions based on chemistry.
